Alkaloids and flavonoids are secondary metabolites in lotus. It is the concentrations of rare types though, that distinguish lotus as the leading source of these to support human defense, signaling, adaptation.
Lotus evolved under persistent environmental stress (low oxygen, acidity, pathogens, and competition), which gave rise to elevated concentrations of metabolites that underpin its therapeutic value.

Polysaccharides are a primary metabolite in lotus. However, it is the structural complexity they exist in that make them noteworthy for bioactivity (especially immune modulation).

For over a hundred million years lotus has survived in wetlands, marshes, and bogs - harsh environments that are chemically and biologically unique on Earth.
